They light up the night sky with bright colors in the shapes of flowers, animals, words, and more. They are commonly seen during special events, such as New Year's Eve, Independence Day, and the opening ceremonies at the Olympic Games. What's more, people can set them off for their own enjoyment or catch them as the focus of festivals and competitions all around the world. What are they? Fireworks of course!

Fireworks were invented in China around the seventh century. Due to the loud noise fireworks make, they were originally used to scare away ghosts and as part of celebrations. Eventually, they spread to other cultures around the world. By the Renaissance, schools were teaching specialists all over Europe how to create complicated and colorful displays.

That tradition lives on, and these specialists are called pyrotechnicians. In Australia, Howard and Sons Pyrotechnics have been making fireworks and putting on spectacular displays for nearly a century. They are the focus of National Geographic Channel's Mega Factories 3: Pyrotechnics. Catch the show this month to see what it takes to make a big bang with fireworks.
