According to conservationists meeting in Doha, Qatar, for the 175-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites), the Internet has emerged as one of the biggest threats to endangered species.

根據在卡達多哈市舉辦，有175個會員國的華盛頓公約締約國家（CITES）會議，網路已經成為瀕危物種最大威脅之一。

It is now easier than ever to buy and sell all kinds of protected animals and related products, from baby lions to polar bear skins, through online chatrooms and auction sites. Paul Todd of the International Fund for Animal Welfare was quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying that the Internet is becoming the dominant factor overall in the global trade in protected species.

現在要從網路聊天室或是拍賣網站上買賣保育動物和其相關產品，從獅子寶寶到北極熊皮，都要比之前簡單得多。如美聯社引用國際動物福利基金會保羅陶德所述，網路正成為全球保育物種交易問題的主要因素。

Buyers and sellers are making the most of the vast global market and anonymity provided by the World Wide Web to regularly trade thousands of endangered species. According to people responsible for policing this illegal trade, the size of problem has become almost impossible to measure. While the US is the largest market, Australia, China, Europe and Russia are also a big part of the problem. On Sunday, delegates voted to ban all trade in a rare kind of Iranian salamander, the population of which has been devastated by Internet trade.

買家和賣家充份利用網際網路不具名的特色以及廣大的全球市場，定期交易數以千計的瀕危物種。根據負責監督這項違法交易的人士指出，目前問題已經嚴重到無法估計的地步。美國為現今最大的市場，而澳洲、中國、歐洲和俄國也是造成這個問題的主因。在週日，會議代表已經投票表決禁止稀有伊朗蠑螈的任何交易，伊朗蠑螈數量因為網路交易幾乎滅絕。

Much to the dismay of environmental activists, however, several high-profile proposals to protect endangered species such as bluefin tuna and polar bears were defeated. Other proposals such as that made by the US and Sweden to reign in trade in rare red and pink coral were also voted down. Coral is made into expensive jewelry and sold largely on the Internet, and delegates were concerned that regulations would have a serious affect on poor fishing communities.

不過讓環境保護人士相當失望的是，保護黑鮪魚和北極熊等幾個備受矚目的提案都沒有通過。 美國和瑞典提出嚴加控管稀有紅珊瑚和粉紅珊瑚交易的提案也遭到否決。因為珊瑚現被製成昂貴的首飾，且在網路上大量販售，代表團認為相關法規將會對貧窮的漁業社區帶來衝擊。
