In the mid-1960s, the students of Amherst College in Massachusetts developed a game that would represent the free-spirited attitude of the times. They created a simple game that did not have referees, but rather encouraged sportsmanship and fair play. The students combined the concepts of football, soccer, and basketball, but used a Frisbee instead of a ball for passing and scoring. Not long afterwards, this little game became Ultimate Frisbee.
Ultimate Frisbee is easy to learn with only a few rules to follow. Teams can have five to seven players, depending on the size of the field. Teams can advance the Frisbee by passing or tossing it to another team member. Players, however, are not allowed to travel with the Frisbee. Passes that are intercepted or dropped will force a turnover to the other team. The team that has scored the most points after 100 minutes or reaches 17 points first wins. As of 2012, there were more than five million players across the United States and many more around the world playing in leagues. Newcomers to the game are often reminded that they are not just simply throwing a Frisbee around: they are playing the game of Ultimate Frisbee.
