In the jungles of Malaysia, a deadly hunter hides behind bright colors.

　　　In 1879, an Australian explorer returned home with an incredible story of brightly colored flowers that caught and ate butterflies in the jungles of Malaysia. 　　1879 年，一名澳洲探險家帶著一則不可思議的故事回到家中：在馬來西亞叢林中目睹色彩鮮豔的花朵捕食了蝴蝶。這種殺手花朵的故事曾經流傳了許多年，之後科學家才發現那根本不是一種罕見的肉食性植物。事實上，牠是一種美麗的昆蟲，他們將之命名為蘭花螳螂。
　　所有的蘭花螳螂都會模仿花朵的形狀和顏色，牠們的身體是白色和亮粉紅色的混合，而牠們弧形的腿看起來就像是花瓣一樣。蘭花螳螂與比較常見的螳螂是同類。兩種昆蟲都運用鋒利的前腿活捉獵物並趁著牠活的時候吃下牠。然而，科學家們驚訝的是，蝴蝶竟會這樣接近掠食者，因此他們做了一些研究。
　　他們發現的第一件事是蘭花螳螂會隱藏在看起來像自己的花朵之中。除了這種偽裝伎倆外，還有一些螳螂會以綠色植物為背景來狩獵，如此牠們就能輕易被看到。接著是蘭花螳螂的顏色。對人類來說，牠們看起來是粉紅與白兩色，但某些昆蟲能看到的顏色比我們可以看到的還多。一隻蝴蝶看到一朵自己無法抗拒、美麗又美味的花朵。很不幸地，對這隻蝴蝶來說，牠不但無法飽餐一頓，這隻可憐的昆蟲反而被那看起來美味的「花朵」從空中一把捉住並吃下肚。
　　生物學家仍在研究蘭花螳螂，且還有很多東西需要學習。但有一點是肯定的：蘭花螳螂既美麗又致命。
